Pilot

Run one practical assignment with us. Free.

We’re looking for instructors and institutions ready to replace a written assignment with a practical task, and to help shape EdSphere while we build it. It starts with a 30-minute conversation.

What a pilot is

One assignment. One course. Real students.

Pick one practical assignment in one course or cohort and let it replace a written deliverable. We set it up together. Students capture and defend on their own phones, the instructor validates, and together we measure the instructor’s time and hear from instructors and students.

  1. 1

    Talk

A 30-minute conversation about the assignment you’d replace and what your assessment office would need to see.

  2. 2

    Design

We set up the practical task with you from your course materials, and you edit it until it’s yours.

  3. 3

    Run

Students do the task, document it on their phones, and defend it. You validate every result.

  4. 4

    Review

We look at the time it took, what instructors and students said, and what we should change.

The exchange

What you get, and what we ask.

You get

  • Free use of EdSphere for the whole pilot.
  • Setup and support from the people building it, not a help desk.
  • A say in what we build next. Your feedback goes straight into the product.
  • A measured answer: how long assessing took, against your own baseline.
  • A permanent, evidence-backed record for every student who takes part.

We ask

  • One instructor willing to swap a written assignment for a practical task.
  • Someone who can tell us what your assessment office or accreditor would need to see.
  • Honest feedback, especially when something doesn’t work.
  • A look at the consent and data model with us before students take part.

What we’ll learn together

Five questions a pilot answers.

We don’t know all the answers yet. A pilot finds out, and if the answer is no, we want to know.

  1. 01

Do instructors happily drop the written assignment, rather than add the practical task on top?

  2. 02

Does marking take at least 30% less time than the instructor’s current way, including setup?

  3. 03

Do instructors’ grades match an independent second marker closely enough for your quality office?

  4. 04

Can students capture every step on their own phones, without help?

  5. 05

Does recording students at work fit your institution’s consent and data rules?

Questions

Before you apply.

Is it really free?
Yes. Pilots cost nothing. We’re asking for your time and your honest feedback instead, because that’s what we need most right now.
How much of my time does it take?
A first conversation, a setup session to design the task together, and a review at the end. We estimate about 10 minutes to set up an assessment and about 4 minutes to mark each student. The pilot measures the real numbers.
What do students need?
A phone with a browser. They open a private link from their email: no app to install and no account to create.
What about consent and student data?
We review the consent and data model with your institution before any student takes part. Media is kept in private storage and used only for the assessment it was captured for.
Which systems do we need?
None in particular. We can start from a Canvas course export, or from your course materials in a conversation. Results export as CSV for your gradebook.
What if it doesn’t work for us?
Tell us. Stopping is always fine, and learning why is one of the most useful things a pilot can give us.
